I am planning on buying a JD 970 with a 440 FEL and a 3PH Woods 7500 BH for $12,000. The JD dealer that I am dealing with is the original dealer and has done all of the service work on it. A cemetary owned it for about 200 hours and the current owner is a grocery store manager and uses it on a hobby farm. He is getting ready to retire and is buying a JD110 TLB to be more serious in retirement. I think it is a very good price, but I am curious what the opinion is on this board? Thanks in advance.

They made the 970 for about 8 years. What year is yours?
I checked out the price of a 1995 970 4WD on machinerylink.com and the price ranges from $13292 for one in premium condition to $11400 to one in fair condition. They are not clear whether the loader is or is not included in that pricing but I'm sure the backhoe is NOT. So the price seems pretty good to me.

Kwschumm, Thanks for the response, I have not been able to see the machine until the dealer trades it in. After looking at you profile I realize my needs are exactly the same as yours. I run a 20 acre vegetable farm and will be starting a a Christmas tree farm this spring. I plan on planting about 1000 trees (primarily Douglas Fir) each year for the next 5 years, this should use about 5 acres of ground. The ground is a marl clay that is a son-of-a-gun to get around in when it is wet. I am focused on the JD970 because it has the backhoe and seems to be priced right, but I am also considering a used Kubota L4310 or a new B7800. These tractors all seem like they will fill my needs nicely. How do you feel about not having a backhoe (how do you dig up stumps)? Has the Borgford BoDozer grapple been useful?

Doug fir roots aren't all that deep. I've worked stumps up to 10" out with my HD loader bucket and cutting edge but the big ones are kind of tough. You get the hang of it though - slow and easy and eventually they come out. I use the bucket to dig in front and to either side of a stump, then use the bucket curl to pull it over. I can do 6-8 6" or smaller stumps an hour this way. When cutting existing overgrown trees up to 6" I either cut it tall, leaving a 4' stump or so, or push the tree over before cutting. The extra leverage helps pop the root ball out of the soil making stumping work go much faster.
I'd like to have a backhoe but am finding it hard to justify since I can do what's needed without. Also, the extra length of the BH would greatly reduce maneuverability in the woods. Still, if I was buying the package again I'd probably go for the hoe.
The BoDozer grapple is great for clean-up chores. I use it to collect the stumps and slash and pile 'em up for burning. Rather than skidding the heavy stuff I cut it into shorter lengths and use the grapple to carry it to the firewood pile. This is my most-used implement. ....

I finally got to see the tractor today. The tractor is a 1997 and is in very good shape. The loader is quick attach and is in good shape however the pins that attach the bucket are pretty sloppy. The Woods 7500 backhoe looks like it got the most use, all of the pins are fairly loose. All of the hydraulics look good and no evidence of leaks. The dealer has serviced the tractor since new and is going to price up some services to include in addition to price.
So at the end of the day I think I will buy it even with the sloppy pins on the Woods 7500. The backhoe will work for occassional tree stump work required. ....

The 970 came with a standard collar shift transmission or an optional syncronized transmission. You can tell which by the serial number. If the Leter "A" is before the final 6 digits, it is a collar shift. If it's the leter "B" it's a Syncronized transmission. The syncro is nicer if you will be changing speeds alot. The collar shift should be less expensive. My book shows a '97 collar shift retails at $10,600. The loader should add $1000-1500. The backhoe should add $2000-2500 (maybe more???) Good luck with your purchase. ....

JDF415, Thanks for the info. The serial# is M00970B161049, so it is a synchronized transmission. I just told the dealer today I would take it. He is doing a full service on it and replacing the broken plastic nose cone for another $329. I have seen many other JD970's on MachineFinder, TraderOnline and Equipment-Locator and they seem to average about $12,000 without the backhoe. So I feel like I am getting the backhoe almost for free. I could not find any decent size compacts with a backhoe for under $14,000. The Kubota dealer was trying to talk me into a BX23 for ~$15,000 but it just looks way to small for my needs. Anything new comparable to the 970 with backhoe was more than $19,000. That seemed like to much for a part time chrismas tree farmer, so hopefully I will be happy as a Deere man. Will load pictures after I get the tractor this weekend. ....
